A Love Letter to God

Whenever I read Psalm 104, I can’t but be reminded of Sonnet 43, written by the Victorian poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Both pros are simply lovely to read, intensely passionate, and provide such creative descriptions, that it is no wonder we breath in deeply, holding in each word, until nearly bursting, and at last collectively, sigh.

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach, when feeling out of sight for the ends of being and ideal grace”.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty” (Psalms 104:1).

So similar! Can you see it?

Wake up, Oh my soul. Where have you been and what have you been thinking? Bless the Lord… Yahweh, my Yahweh, who has loved me and shown me tender mercies and lovingkindness. He has given me love that is faithful and true. Let me count the ways. God, my Yahweh, you are majestic and dress each morning in beauty, glory, and honor. You are infinitely wise and good, everything excellent.

“I love thee to the level of everyday’s most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise” (Browning).
“Covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent” (Psalms 104:2).

I love you, God, my God. My Yahweh. You are light (1 John 1:5), the Father of lights (James 1:17), you dwell in light (1 Timothy 6:16) effervescent, holy light, which was manifested on the first day (Genesis 1:3). Your light was stretched out like the firmament (Genesis 1:7)… the expanse of heaven… and we are pleased to play beneath your glorious canopy. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you (Psalms 139: 11-12). [Because your] light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (1 John 1:5). [Thank you my holy God that] you have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in Jesus may not remain in darkness (John 12: 46). Thank you that if we walk in the light, as [you are] in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1: 7).

“I love thee with the breath, smiles, tears, of all my life and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death” (Browning).

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1: 21). Amen
