During VBS: Go!
Day 3: God is always with children
“But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. ‘But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:39-48).
During persecution, persecution onto death; even when children are martyred, God is sovereign. How comforting it is to know our God is in control. Another Hebrew name for God is Adon Kol-ha’arets, the Lord of the earth. There are many places in the bible that demonstrate our Adon Kol-ha’arets exerting control over the laws of nature, to serve His purposes (Genesis 1&2, 7&8, 21:1; Numbers 17:8, 22:28; Exodus 7-12; 1 Samuel 5: 1-12; 1 Kings 17: 14-16; 2 Kings 2:24, 4: 38-41, 6:6; 20: 9-11; Joshua 19:13; Judges 6: 37-40, 14-16; John 11: 43-44).
For us, it is beyond our comprehension that precious, innocent children can be treated with such malice. This is when we are most apt to question and doubt, yet God demonstrates His absolute control, even in this. For Jesus said, “I promise that today you will be with me in paradise.” And He said, “There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I wouldn’t tell you this, unless it was true. I am going there to prepare a place for each of you” (John 14:2). “And I know that this man was caught up into paradise–whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows–and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter” (2 Corinthians 12:3-4). Paradise is real and one day, if we have surrendered to Christ, we will go there too. And when we get there, we will meet many martyrs and I am sure that they will say, ‘Christ was worth it; Christ is worth it all because He is our all in all. We would not trade anything, even death, for the opportunity of knowing Him’.
Thank you, God, Father in Heaven and our Lord Christ, for Your inexhaustible grace. Your enemies are cunning and strong, without Your spiritual wisdom and discernment we fail; many trials are too great for our natural strength to bear; many temptations we are unable to resist on our own for we are too weak; many duties we are unable to perform without You, because they are too great. Thank you that You have already given us Divine strength to discern, bear trials; to perform duties; and to glorify Your name. Help us truly surrender and to trust Your strength, not our own. Thank you for strengthening our bodies, our minds and our souls for today. Thank you for Your constant supply of grace for without it we wither and decay. Thank you for invigorating us for Your glory. Thank you. Amen
- Thanking God, Adon Kol-ha’arets, Lord of the earth, who has control.
- Teach us to trust in You and surrender control to you.
- We pray for children who will attend VBS in Europe.
- For children to know that God never sleeps or slumbers, but watches over them, not for harm, but to love and bless them.
- For God’s people to experience and worship Him in spirit and in truth. Pray that the Holy Spirit will fall like rain on His people; washing us clean and quenching our thirst. Pray showers of blessing. Pray for us to desire to know God more intimately, to desire more and more grace, and to commit more to His Kingdom.
