An Advent Nosegay

An Advent Nosegay

Advent2You may have noticed, Advent is a big theme for chatter on social media this year. There are Advent calendars and devotionals aplenty. Everyone is talking or promoting Advent, which heralds the coming of Christ, pointing toward His second coming , getting one’s soul ready during the month of December.

I must admit, I too, have been caught up in thoughts and daydreams of Advent…Christ, God born in flesh, living a sinless life and dying to restore me back to God is a pretty awe-inspiring event. My Advent musings have been fixated on the word, Anthology.

perfect-wedding-day-dot-comAnthology is such an intriguing word. Literally defined, it means flower gathering.
I was drawn to this theme of flower gathering for Advent from the moment I heard its meaning. Picking flowers reminds me of childhood memories with my German grandmother and her love for her family and community. 20016_tussy_mussyI remember she taught me to make little nosegays for the first of May to inaugurate the dawn of spring after winters long chill and leave them anonymously on the neighbor’s door knobs to brighten the spirit. Or perhaps it was gathering Memorials’ fragrant bloom to color the cold, back drop of gray stone bearing the names of loved ones still remembered. Flowers are such a beautiful creation. God in His love has brought flowers to the world, to revive our souls.

Today, I have a little bouquet; a nosegay I suppose, for you. It is a beautiful poem for your flower collection.

Lord, let Your light
Light of Your face
Shine on us

Lord, let Your light
Light of Your face
Shine on us

That we may be saved
That we may have life
To find our way
In the darkest night
Let your light shine on us

Lord, let your grace
Grace from Your hand
Come over us

Lord, let your grace
Grace from Your hand
Come over us

That we may be saved
That we may have life
To find our way
In the darkest night
Let Your grace come over us

Lord, let Your love
Love with no end
Come over us

Lord, let Your love
Love with no end
Come over us

That we may be saved
That we may have life
To find our way
In the darkest night
Let Your love come over us
Let Your light shine on us

From a song by Phillips, Craig & Dean
