Honey, Biscuits and Chasing God

Honey, Biscuits and Chasing God

My favorite food in the entire world, hands down, has to be honey and biscuits. Most people, especially southerners who enjoy this tasty treat might say, I love biscuits and honey, but for me, honey and biscuits truly are the bee’s knees. I know… bad pun. Biscuits do not make the honey. Au, contraire, honey makes the biscuit. Let’s think about this…

Honestly, have you ever eaten anything more magnificently glorious and pleasantly satisfying than a piping hot-dripping-with-golden-luxurious-molten-finger-licking-honey, biscuit? Of course, the subtle favor of salted butter swirling happily with our amber ambrosia on a fluffy, white bed, does deserve a second mention as part of this heavenly concoction.

Okay, okay, I do admit it Biscuits are part of the intoxicating allure of honey biscuits and when I was forced to become gluten free, my world was shaken. Gluten free biscuits are, frankly, less than appealing and if you really want to know what I think of them, they are quite nasty! So for the last year, 12 months, 365 days, 26 hours, and 49 minutes, I have not had the pleasure of savoring or even tantalizing my taste buds with a honey biscuit extravaganza, not even one measly, minuscule, little bite… intentionally, that is. There was this one time in which there were two plates of biscuits; one with GF biscuits and the other with regular biscuits. After I had downed two, and was reaching for a third, the alarm sounded, “Mother, those are not the gluten free biscuits”! Damage done… but secretly, the five days of pain and bloating weren’t so bad… I wonder if one forgets the pain of irritable bowel after a honey biscuit, like women forget the pain of labor…. Gads, this post is starting to sound like confessions of a gluten-free, honey biscuit addict. “Hi… I’m Sharon and I love, no adore, honey… honey biscuits”.

Apparently, in light of my open and bold-face admission, I must acquiesce to this… biscuits are a perfect match for my beloved honey. You too must admit that honey is not only smooth, delightfully delicious, but also contains many healing elements. It is nectar created by God. I actually read about a diet called, The Honey Diet that claims you can lose weight by creating a honey elixir that increases metabolism. I don’t know about all that, but I do know that the bible does speak of honey in glowing terms for the most part… a land flowing with milk and honey… manna tastes like wafers made from honey… curds and honey. One of my favorite analogies used in the bible in reference to honey is as a measurement of our pursuit and desire of God.

“The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb” Psalms, 19:7-10.

“But God would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with wild honey from the rock, I would satisfy you.” Psalms 81:16

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth” Psalms 119:103.

These scriptures are true and as much as I love honey and honey biscuits, I love God more. He is more desirable than gold, than much fine gold and sweeter than the best, Sidr honey (Yemeni honey, the finest honey in the world) from the honeycomb.
