Daydreamin’…

Daydreamin’…

“What a day for a daydream… what a day for a day dreamin’ boy. I’m lost in a daydream. Dreaming bout my bundle of joy”…

Do you remember that old song, sung by The Lovin’ Spoonful? Singing about daydreams is a fairly common theme, as I found out when I was looking up the lyrics for this particular version. In fact, according to Google, it appears that every generation has come up with their own version of daydreaming… from Duke Ellington to David Cassidy or Doris Day to Smashing Pumpkins or even John Denver to Menswear. Well, why not sing about it. We all do it.

Per chance, what do you daydream about?

Are your daydreams scary, humiliating scenarios that rarely come true? Like getting a pink slip and having to tell your spouse or parents? Not finishing the project you have been working on for the last eighteen months or worse yet, having it rejected as unworkable, too expensive or passé?
There are many places in the Bible talk about meditating or daydreaming about God. One of my favorite sources for a daydream is Psalms 104. Verse 34 says, “My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD“. That is, I will find pleasure, happiness… fulfillment… satisfaction, in meditating on his character and works.

For a moment close your eyes and think about this verse….

“He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth” (Psalms 104: 14).

Or better still, think about this one…

“He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth”(Psalms 104: 20-21)

Then there is my personal favorite… (This is a really good one!)

“There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein” (Psalms 104: 26).

Oh, by the way, there go the ships… ships just now, sailing by and oh yes, there is a sea creature playing in the ocean… Could it be a whale, a dolphin or maybe even some marine creature not yet identified like one claimed to be in Loch Ness… maybe, a dragon… and this sea beastie is playing! Playing! Take that in for a moment. God made us to play… now that is worthy of a daydream or two…

“O LORD, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches”(Psalms 104: 24).
