Ramadan: Ameera’s Carrots

old lady 2The joke is that Ameera must be 300 years old.  She is a petite, very old woman, who always ready to speak her mind.  Being closer to her age than I like to admit, she makes me smile.    A friend who is a Follower of Jesus first met Helen when she was new in the neighborhood.  On the way to the market, she opened her gate and found Ameera standing very near the door; Ameera immediately began fussing at my friend.  Even though her tone was clear, her words were hard to understand…we are still not sure if it was her dialect or lack of teeth.  Either way, my friend understood that because they were neighbors, Ameera thought that my friend should be asking her for carrots and other things she might need.

Several years have passed since that first day and Ameera still fusses at my friend.  Nothing has changed.  She fusses when her daughters come to visit and we don’t join them; she fusses if my friend travels without telling her; she fusses if we don’t ask to borrow carrots.  Ameera’s age gives her much authority in the village.  Not many people would disagree with her on anything, even if she decided to follow Jesus.  She is a pillar in the community.  She like many elderly family members are greatly respected and honored.  Her children and grandchildren are plentiful in this neighborhood; many are open to discussing truth.  Pray that our Father would open Ameera’s eyes and others in her family, to see their sin; their need for a Savior, and that Jesus will one day be praised and honored in this family.

“Our Father in heaven, let your name be kept holy. Let your kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth as it is done in heaven. Give us our daily bread today. Forgive us as we forgive others. Don’t allow us to be tempted. Instead, rescue us from the evil one. (Matthew 6:9-13)

“You were rescued from the useless way of life that you learned from your ancestors. But you know that you were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don’t last forever.   You were rescued by the precious blood of Christ, that spotless and innocent lamb. Christ was chosen even before the world was created, but because of you, he did not come until these last days. And when he did come, it was to lead you to have faith in God, who raised him from death and honored him in a glorious way. That’s why you have put your faith and hope in God”. 1 Peter 1:18-21

470_muslim_women_061006Holy Father and our Lord Christ, thank you for rescuing people from everything that is evil.  Thank you for bringing goodness into our hearts. You are Goodness. You did not do it by becoming a slave master, but by becoming a slave who will give Your life to rescue many people.   Thank you for Your love for Helen, her family and so many others like them.  We leave them in your loving and precious hands.
