“For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever; in the heavens, you will establish your faithfulness.” (Psalms 89:2)
During times of trial, God always, always will be a very present help. When this psalm was written, the family of David was in ruins. And yet, this psalm begins not with grumbling or sadness. It begins with jubilant songs of praise. There is great benefit in singing praises to God during the darkest of times. When we are in trouble, we usually complain, and complain, and complain, some more. We complain to anyone who will listen, but this doesn’t help and we stay completely and utterly miserable. Instead, we can have great joy by praising God during the trouble. Our God is an unchanging God, in a changing world and His mercies are inexhaustible and new every morning; and He must be the source for our joy and praise. There is a popular song that repeats these words; “I will sing of Your love forever”. I am sure you have heard it before. The words don’t say, I will sing of Your love when everything is going my way or I will sing of Your love when my bank account is full and when everyone loves me and because I have the best job ever and live in the greatest country with the most superior government and president, and my kids are perfect, and my spouse is so attentive, and, and, and… The song says we will sing of His love forever and no not matter what. We may lose our health, our job, our friends, our spouse, the support of fellow Believers, our money, our home, the country we believed in, but we will NEVER lose God.
A time will come, if it hasn’t already, when we find ourselves in utter ruin. Don’t fret. Don’t complain, just rest in Christ’s divine grace. What good father would not remain close to his suffering child? Is our heavenly Father any less compassionate? God’s merciful loving-kindness shall be “built up”, one stone after another until the building of God’s loving-kindness reaches heaven.
Over the mountains and the sea
Your river runs with love for me
And I will open up my heart
And let the Healer set me free
I’m happy to be in the truth
And I will daily lift my hands
For I will always sing of
Of when Your love came down
I could sing of Your love forever (x4)
Oh I feel like dancing
It’s foolishness I know
But when the world has seen the light
They will dance with joy
Like we’re dancing now
I could sing of your love forever (5x)
Thank you, Father for Your love and tender mercies. We don’t understand it, but we don’t have to understand it. We accept it and love You in return. We praise and adore you. Heal our hearts and set us free to love like you love. May our love be patient and kind. May our love bear all things; May our love believe all things; May our love hope all things and endure all things (1 Corinthians 13). Make us more like You. Amen.
