The First Overcomer

1 Week Before VBS: Get Set!

Day 4:  Jesus dies and comes back to life

Key Scriptures for Bible Discovery Luke 22:66-24:12

“[Jesus] said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things” (Luke 24: 46-48).

As Followers of Christ (Isa al Masih), being in the world, but not tainted by it, we must prepare and be ready to give a defense for the Kingdom (John 17: 13-16; 2 Timothy 4: 2).  And because we share and live for the Kingdom, confrontation and accusations are inevitable (1 Peter 5:8).

The tongue, unlike all the creatures of the world, cannot be tamed by human means (James 3:7-8).  Only God can tame the tongue.  Therefore, we must expect those who do not know our Lord and even fellow-Followers of Christ, who live in the flesh, to make malicious accusations.   Christ suffered much throughout His short life, but He overcame evil with good.  In Christ, we too can be over-comers.  Jesus said, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world (John 16:33).  Christ overcame the world by His love. “If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them a drink; for by doing this you will make them burn with shame. Do not let evil defeat you; instead, conquer evil with good” (Romans12: 20-21).

“Whenever we cannot love in the old, human way . . . God can give us the perfect way” (Corrie ten Boom,1971).

Thank You, Father that Your thoughts are not our thoughts and Your ways are not our ways.  Your ways are higher than the heavens (Isaiah 55:8-9). Please give us the desire to change and the strength to turn away from the sin that so easily entangles us (Hebrews 12:1).  Bring Your healing to the church.  Make us stronger in You.  Unite our hearts as we pray for our communities to be rescued.  Thank you for all Your tender mercies, Your lovingkindness, and for the hope we have in You. We are excited to see what You will do as we prepare for VBS.  You have said, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined all the things that God has prepared for those who love him (2 Corinthians 2: 9) and “You help those who wait for you” (Isaiah 64:4).  We excitedly wait.  Amen

Additional Prayers:

  • Thanking God for Christ, the first over-comer.
  • Teach us Lord Jesus to be like you. Help us to love in your perfect love; not as a noisy gong or a tinkling cymbal, but with kindness, patience, gentleness, humbleness, rejoicing in truth not evil, and always being supportive, hopeful, loyal and trusting (1 Corinthians 13).
  • For children to see and learn Your ways from the church who are working in VBS.
  • For the children who will become workers in Gods fields, bringing in a holy harvest. Pray for those children who God will anoint and call out for specific kingdom tasks.  Pray for special favor and revelation regarding the work God has for these set-apart children.  Pray blessings on blessings as we see their new commitment to Christ or their baptism during VBS.  Pray for experiences that will redefine them as over-comers in Christ’s kingdom.
